Sam’s denim jacket, which he gifted to Julie, is a symbol of nostalgia, regret, second chances, and Sam’s characterization. The jacket is one of Sam’s favorite things to wear, but he gave it to Julie as a meaningful gesture of love. She recalls pleasant times of Sam wearing it but ultimately decides to get rid of the jacket, which reflects the themes of Flashbacks and Memory and Coping With Grief and Letting Go:
Inside my closet is Sam’s denim jacket. The one with the wool collar and embroidered patches (band logos and flags of places he’s traveled) along the sleeves that he ironed on himself. I’ve had it for so long, and wear it so often, I forgot it was his. [...] The denim feels cold to the touch, almost damp. Like it’s still holding in rain from the last time I wore it out. Sam and I race down puddle-filled streets as bursts of lightning lit up the sky. It is pouring on our way home from the Screaming Trees concert. I pull the jacket over my head as Sam holds his signed guitar tight to his chest, desperate to keep it dry. […] Out of everything I’m throwing out, this reminds me of him the most. He wore it every day. Maybe it’s all in my head, but it still smells like him. I never got the chance to give it back like I promised (16-17).
Though the denim jacket triggers flashbacks of Sam and Julie considers keeping it, she convinces herself that it would be a “mistake” to hold onto the clothing, since she believes “everything has to go, or else I’ll never be able to move on with my life” (17). Sam’s handmade touches on the jacket display his characterization; the clothing was a prized possession shown by the time he took to iron on band logos and places he traveled. Sam personalized the clothing to reflect himself, including his love of music, traveling adventures, and laid-back style. Because the gifted jacket so closely reflects Sam’s creative, musical, and loving personality, Julie is overwhelmed by nostalgia and impulsively can’t keep this physical reminder of Sam.
After speaking with Mika about being absent for Sam’s funeral services and abandoning his memories, Julie changes her mind about throwing away Sam’s items. She deeply regrets tossing away his things to cope with her grief. Thus, the jacket also symbolizes her regret, as the main item she misses from the box she discarded and the closest physical link she had to Sam. When Julie races back for the box to find it already taken by the garbage truck, she loses her chance to reclaim the jacket and other remnants of Sam.
Not only does the jacket connect Julie to Sam by retaining his smell and fond memories, but it reappears in her dreams. Just as her relationship with Sam is rediscovered through her phone, the jacket is a similar link to their surreal connection. Her regret doesn’t dissolve, but she feels better that she found the jacket in her dream. When she apologizes to Sam about tossing away all traces of him, he tells her to take anything new. She can’t replace the denim jacket, but she has a second chance to keep other reminders of Sam.
The bookends represent Julie and Sam’s separation. Because Julie never has both of the two bookends at once since Sam bought them as separate gifts, they’re a symbol of isolation—just as Julie and Sam are isolated from one another. With Sam’s death, they no longer inhabit the same space. Though he talks to her from beyond, Julie and Sam are not tangibly together and never can be again. His tragic death separates them, just as the bookends are separated.
Because Sam and Julie are reunited through their calls, Sam thinks the bookends will be complete at first. They both believe their connection can be like “before,” a repeated phrase Sam uses, but only later do they confront Sam’s death and their impending separation forever, just like the bookends. Julie at first can’t admit that she threw away the other bookend, which mirrors how she tried to suppress Sam’s memories because his loss was too painful. Although Sam understands and isn’t mad, Julie must grapple with the fact that the bookend set is torn apart, split just like her and Sam.
One bookend is physically missing after Julie tosses it away, reflecting that Sam is missing from her life. Julie must learn to go on alone, get through her grief, and continue her journey without her matching pair. By the novel’s conclusion, she is like the lone bookend she has, rather than a bookend tied to Sam, the other half that makes her whole. Like the bookend, through Sam guiding her through her grief, she can stand alone and carry herself forward in life without Sam.
Integral as the magical element that allows Julie to speak with Sam, her phone is primarily a symbol of an otherworldly connection, but also one of trust, isolation, and obsession. As Julie and Sam are miraculously reunited through long talks on their cell phones, their connection is never explained. Instead, it’s a magical phenomenon linking the spiritual world to the mortal world, as Sam can only tell Julie he’s somewhere with endless fields and huge skies and doesn’t understand why or how their calls are working. Julie must trust Sam and their strange connection, rather than question the logic of their calls, to cherish her second chance at quality time with him.
Only Julie’s phone links her and Sam together, which solidifies the strength of their relationship and love but also divides them from others. Sam chooses to answer only Julie’s calls; he knows Julie needs him the most to work through her grief, and he isn’t ready to say goodbye either. Their deep feelings are shown by hour-long phone calls, flashbacks, and shared reminiscing, yet every time Julie is on the phone with Sam, she doesn’t receive any notifications from others, such as her mom and friends. These missed calls and texts isolate Julie further from her life outside of Sam and increase her obsession with their magical calls. In extreme moments, Julie finally reconnects with others, as she tells Mika the truth and lets her speak to Sam on the phone. Julie breaks the damaging (if unintentional) avoidance of others by selflessly giving up the strength of their connection, allowing Sam to speak with Mika and his little brother James to help them heal too. Both Sam and Julie realize that others need them too, so they can’t only cling to each other.
Though the phone connects Julie to Sam, it conversely divides her from those still living, who love and care about her and need her support too, especially Mika. Due to the phone’s block while talking to Sam, Julie misses the vigil for Sam that Mika hosts, texts about the lantern vigil, and worried messages from her mom. Only after her final call with Sam does Julie’s phone register the lost messages. Same as her phone, Julie can reunite with everyone and move forward in life again, rather than be involved only with Sam.
The phone also has rules that help establish the plot, Julie’s character arc, and their magical connection. Sam tells her early in the book that only her phone will work for their link to last, that they have limited calls, and that she must answer if he ever calls her, or the lose their communication completely. These rules establish the magical element as a limited power and an effective plot device for story-forward momentum, as well as a time frame for Julie and Sam to grow, since they both must face their goodbyes by the last call. Later, Julie’s phone breaking shows that she must give up her talks with Sam, finally coping with her grief and letting go, though she’ll never forget him.
