Character Analysis

Annie Gallagher

Annie/Anne Gallagher is a New York native of Irish heritage. She was raised by her Irish grandfather Eoin and grew up to be a best-selling author. When Eoin dies from cancer, Annie goes to Ireland for the first time to scatter his ashes on Lough Gill when a portal through time, brings her to 1921. In the past, her grandfather is a child, and Annie pretends to be Anne, Eoin’s mother. She both propels and preserves history by reciting traditional stories, songs, and poems to child Eoin, who will one day grow up and repeat these stories to his granddaughter Annie. Annie embodies the cyclical nature of history and represents the Irish American diaspora’s role in preserving culture. Annie is a passionate reader of history and the gift of experiencing that history helps her uncover the harsh realities of the past that she once romanticized.

Eoin Gallagher

Eoin Gallagher is Annie’s grandfather and Anne’s son. Born in Ireland and having grown up during the Irish Civil War of 1922, Eoin leaves Ireland in 1933 to pursue an education and career in New York City, one of many Irish who left their country to pursue opportunity abroad. Eoin never returns to his birthplace, but by gifting Annie his family heirlooms and sending her to Ireland to scatter his ashes, he pushes Annie towards her historical destiny, thus propelling the intersection between the past, present, and future. As a child, Eoin is a joy to Annie and inspires her to stay in 1921 Ireland. This role reversal symbolizes the repetitive nature of history.

Thomas Smith

Thomas Smith is an Irish doctor who joins revolutionary forces fighting for Irish independence. He is a close family friend of the Gallaghers and spends years secretly in love with his friend Declan’s wife Anne. He saves Annie from Lough Gill and they fall in love, fulfilling Thomas’s desire for Anne while ensuring that he doesn’t betray the memory his deceased friend. Thomas becomes a father figure to Eoin, and his journals bookend each chapter, providing the reader with first-person accounts of historical events: As a close ally to Michael Collins, Thomas bears witness to the tumultuous and important moments of the early 20th century in Ireland. Thomas’s desires are fulfilled when he reunites with Annie in 2001.

Michael Collins

Michael Collins was a legendary Irish revolutionary hero, responsible for bringing together disparate liberating forces into one Irish Republican Army (IRA), spear-heading the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921, and inspiring countless Irishmen and women to take up arms in defense of their nationality. An activist for Irish language and culture, Collins symbolizes the reemergence of the Celtic hero. In the novel, Collins is a secondary character whose downfall and assassination propel the plot, inspiring Annie to tell Thomas about the future.
