Chapter 13 Summary

The narrative flashes back to eight years ago. Amy is struggling with trigonometry and wishes Jade would study with her. The young girl appears in Amy’s bedroom, telling her that she’s going to fail the upcoming test. The girl says Amy will never go to college or medical school, that her life will be ruined. Amy’s mother calls her for dinner, and the girl disappears. Amy confesses to her mother that she’s worried about her test. Her mother offers to hire a tutor, but Amy knows they can’t afford one, so she refuses.

Chapter 14 Summary

Amy returns to the nurse’s station where Cameron is writing a detailed note on his interview with Spider-Dan. She pulls Dr. Beck aside and tells him about the noise in Seclusion One, expressing concern that Damon Sawyer escaped his restraints. Dr. Beck says it’s not possible, and that they’ll check on him in the morning. He turns his attention to Cameron, asking him to describe Spider-Dan’s symptoms, which he does quickly. Dr. Beck suggests Amy visit Spider-Dan too, but when she says she already spoke to Will, Dr. Beck explains Spider-Dan displays a classic case of schizophrenia, while Will’s is atypical because his symptoms appeared later in life.

Chapter 15 Summary

Amy has 11 hours left of her shift. She and Cameron go to the patient lounge to speak to Spider-Dan together. As Amy waits for Cameron to get Spider-Dan, another patient she dubs “Clint Eastwood” complains someone gave him crackers, but he’s diabetic and can’t eat them. She calms him by sending him to his room with the promise that someone will get rid of the crackers. Cameron and Spider-Dan arrive, and they talk about Spider-Dan’s webs. Spider-Dan claims they don’t work properly, and Cameron says sometimes it’s necessary to make webs, and suggests Spider-Dan use dental floss to make a web. Spider-Dan says Damon Sawyer is going to kill everyone tonight.

Chapter 16 Summary

Cameron reassures Amy that nothing will happen to her. He takes a package of Ring Dings out of his pocket, telling her that he brought them because he knows she likes them. Amy refuses them. She thinks back on the party where she met Cameron, and they bonded over their mutual frustration with their pathology professor. But now, she balks when he suggests wanting to reconcile. Amy refuses to eat dinner with Cameron, sending him away. Will enters the patient lounge and plays the piano. Amy asks him about Damon Sawyer, and Will admits he screamed when they put him in Seclusion One, but doesn’t think there’s anything to be afraid of since he’s locked up and will be moved in the morning.

Chapter 17 Summary

Amy has 10 hours left of her shift. She goes to the staff lounge to eat her cheese sandwich. She tries to get service on her phone but can’t. Amy hears a noise outside and finds patient Miguel in the hallway, again anxious to leave. He begins inputting numbers into the keypad on the main door. Amy goes to Dr. Beck’s office, letting him know what Miguel is doing. Dr. Beck tells her not to worry and suggests she do some reading or get some sleep.

Chapter 18 Summary

The narrative flashes back to eight years ago. Amy is in the library, waiting to study for the trigonometry test with Jade. Jade shows up late, but promises to study hard. However, she takes them to the fourth floor where she convinces a janitor to open their teacher’s classroom. She takes a copy of the test from the teacher’s desk. Amy realizes what Jade is up to and refuses to participate.

Chapter 19 Summary

Amy has 9 hours left of her shift. Jade takes her to her room and apologizes for being rude. She confesses to being jealous of Amy because she has her life together, and is currently struggling with her medication. They talk about Cameron and how he broke up with Amy, and Jade again suggests Amy become involved with Will. She asks Amy if she still sees things, and suggests Amy might belong in Ward D, too. The nurse Ramona asks what Amy is doing, and she says she decided to follow more than one patient.

Chapter 20 Summary

Amy returns to her dinner but ultimately throws it out. She tries to get service on her phone but can’t. She goes to the nurse’s desk and takes Mary’s chart, deciding to speak to her. As Amy passes Seclusion One, she thinks she hears someone asking to be let out. When she enters Mary’s room, the elderly woman mistakenly calls her Nicole. Mary says she might die soon, but is content to do so, as she lost her husband 10 years ago. When Amy asks about her knitting, Mary says she only does it so she can have needles as a weapon. She gives Amy one of her needles, and Amy realizes they are not child-safe, but steel. She puts it in her pocket.

Chapter 21 Summary

As Amy finishes up with Mary, Clint Eastwood enters Mary’s room and gives her a package of crackers. Amy returns to the nurse’s desk to write a note on Mary. Ramona hands her Jade’s chart and Amy begins to read it, but then the power goes out. When the power comes back on, Miguel is standing in front of the nurse’s desk, seemingly covered in blood.

Chapter 22 Summary

The narrative flashes back to eight years ago. Amy has dinner with her family, worried about her trigonometry test and wondering if seeing the young girl is something she should be concerned about. She’s not eating, and her mother calls her out on it. When Amy asks if seeing things is a concern, her mother assumes she’s talking about Jade and assures her that they can get her help. Amy excuses herself to study.

Chapter 23 Summary

The blood on Miguel turns out to be strawberry jelly. He urinated on a light switch, causing the power outage. Dr. Beck speaks to Miguel and decides to put him in Seclusion Two because he isn’t cooperating. He asks for Cameron’s help, but no one knows where he is. Dr. Beck again tells Amy to sleep.

Chapter 24 Summary

Amy has 7 hours left of her shift. She searches for Cameron, but can’t find him. She considers informing Dr. Beck, but remembers Cameron has a temper. She remembers him punching through a wall when he learned he didn’t get a research fellowship he applied for. Amy runs into Jade, who tells her that Cameron likely stepped out to get fresh air. She notes Seclusion One is silent.

Chapters 13-24 Analysis

Dr. Beck is patient with Amy and Cameron, even giving Cameron an oral quiz to check his knowledge of psychiatry. Amy has already taken an interest in Dr. Beck because of his good looks, and this only adds to her good feelings toward him, allowing her to trust him as a mentor. She turns to him whenever something doesn’t seem right, such as the noises in Seclusion One. Trust becomes an issue for her as the night progresses, but she has yet to doubt Dr. Beck. Cameron seems to feel the same way, continuing to pander to Dr. Beck while attempting to reconcile with Amy. Amy brushes him off, and this causes a rift that she will regret later in the novel. Cameron’s conversation with Spider-Dan, in which he tells him to make artificial webs out of dental floss, will become important later on as well.

Cameron disappears without a trace, and Amy can’t find him within Ward D. She considers seeking help but decides against it because he has a temper. This reveal might be another reason why she doesn’t want to reconcile; Cameron’s previous insensitivity and temper frame him as unlikeable, perhaps suspicious in the context of a thriller. With that said, Amy’s decision to stay quiet seems counterintuitive as she is still nervous about working this particular shift. Jade suggests Cameron left for fresh air, but Amy and Cameron were told there is an alarm that rings whenever the main door opens. No one heard this alarm, but Amy doesn’t notice the discrepancy at this point.

Amy’s interactions with Will stand out due to the fact that he appears to have good mental health. He is polite, but also aloof and reluctant to discuss his symptoms—which Dr. Beck notes are unusual for someone diagnosed with schizophrenia. This suggests there is more to Will than meets the eye, and opens the door to trust. At the same time, his diagnosis frightens Amy because of the violent nature of his reported delusions, which touches on the theme of Mental Health Diagnoses and Their Impact on Patients. Speaking of patients, the power outage is a dramatic moment that will have lasting consequences as the night progresses. Miguel has been trying to escape since Amy arrived, but his actions are assumed to stem from his schizophrenia. However, as more patients express concerns about the safety of Ward D, his actions take on a new light. After the outage, he is assumed to be covered in strawberry jelly rather than blood, but Amy never verifies this.

Amy’s past continues to be revealed through flashbacks. In particular, she is worried about seeing the young girl again, but never voices this to anyone, reinforcing the theme of Fear of Knowing Oneself. Her mother expresses concern for Jade’s mental health, as Jade’s mother was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and likely passed it on to Jade. This concern likely overshadowed Amy’s own, as Jade’s issues were out in the open. Yet, Amy feels comfortable telling Jade about her love life in the present. It seems she is falling into old habits despite fearing Jade after their last visit. It is also significant that Amy has armed herself despite the lack of a clear threat. Her weapon, one of Mary’s steel knitting needles, will come into play later.
