Physically, he is the quintessential prince—dark-haired, tall, broad-shouldered, and athletic—traits that combine with his noble title to mark him as a figure of admiration and reverence.

In addition to this lofty lineage, Kamran’s actions and reactions reveal him to be a young man poised at the crossroads of personal desire and duty. He often exhibits signs of an inner duality—sometimes acting rashly due to his pervasive feelings of anger, and at other times displaying restraint that stands as a testament to his deep-rooted sense of responsibility. Internally, Kamran is a whirlpool of emotions. King Zaal embodies a paradoxical blend of paternal authority and Machiavellian manipulation. Functioning as the patriarchal linchpin of the Ardunian Empire, Zaal wields his influence as a ruler and as the grandfather to Prince Kamran, setting the stage for the interplay of duty and desire that characterizes Kamran’s own narrative arc. Zaal is depicted as a stern custodian of tradition and empire who remains committed to preserving the power and legacy of his realm. Yet this unyielding focus becomes a form of tyranny, as evidenced by his edict to execute Alizeh for her Jinn lineage and identity as a potential queen—a decision that serves to escalate the narrative tension significantly.

As the plot unfolds, King Zaal undergoes a transformation that serves to humanize him while complicating readers’ understanding of his character. Initially, he appears as the archetype of the ruthless ruler who is willing to sacrifice individual lives for the perceived greater good of the empire. However, his calculated exterior shatters with the revelation of his dark secret. Many years before the beginning of the novel, Zaal struck a sinister deal with the devil to extend his own life by feeding the brains of children to serpents. This macabre secret is exposed by King Cyrus near the end of the novel. The plot twist lays bare the moral corruption that has been eating away at the foundations of Zaal’s authority.

Zaal’s demise at the hands of Cyrus serves as a cataclysmic moment that breaks open the floodgates for political and emotional upheaval in the empire. His death triggers a profound transformation in Prince Kamran, who now must grapple with the dismantled legacy of his grandfather while navigating the rocky terrain of newfound power and responsibility. Omid Shekarzadeh plays a catalytic role in the narrative, for his actions inadvertently bring Kamran and Alizeh together while also helping to reveal the class struggles and social inequities inherent in Ardunian society. His attempt to steal from and possibly murder Alizeh acts as a catalyst that inadvertently furthers Alizeh and Kamran’s relationship, and weaves Alizeh deeper into the unfolding drama of Ardunia. His presence also ignites dormant questions of identity, self-discovery, and choice for Alizeh, pushing her toward a deeper self-examination. The serendipitous chain of events set in motion by Omid’s actions also emphasizes the thematic undercurrent of destiny and interconnectedness running through the narrative. Omid might appear to be a secondary character, but his actions resonate on a much larger scale, highlighting how the characters are often ensnared in a web of societal norms, political intrigues, and destinies that they can neither fully comprehend nor control.

Hazan serves as the complex and loyal minister to Prince Kamran. He carefully navigates the tumultuous world of court politics while remaining a grounding influence on Kamran as the plot progresses. Serving as both an advisor and a watchful eye for Kamran, Hazan embodies the intricate dynamics of royal power and responsibility. His multifaceted role places him at the intersection of Kamran’s personal emotional struggles and the harsh requirements of leadership. Hazan’s ethical dilemmas are accentuated when he must contend with Kamran’s growing affection for Alizeh, and he often serves as a voice of caution that straddles both societal norms and royal obligations.

The plot twist that reveals Hazan’s clandestine connection to King Cyrus and a magical firefly redefines him as a potentially duplicitous character with hidden agendas. By the end of the novel, it remains unclear if he means to aid Alizeh or to further the devil and Cyrus’s plot to manipulate her. This twist throws his loyalties into question, changing the reader’s perception of him from a principled royal advisor to possibly a double agent operating under dual allegiances.
