Chapters 100-125 Analysis

Chapters 100-125 lead Grace’s narrative through its climax, falling action, denouement, and resolution. The scenes in which Grace and her friends go to the club, visit the casino, battle Art for mental control, and confront Art and Sofía at the press conference intensify the narrative atmosphere. The scene on the beach in Chapter 115 acts as the narrative climax and thus deescalates the narrative tension. In this scene, Grace summons the power, will, and courage to not only confront Art but also let go of her “guilt and grief and pain” to help others (299). Her encounter with Daniel in Salacia in Chapter 114 empowers her to do so. This dreamlike sequence ushers Grace out of her sorrow and shame and into a new era of her life, making a significant shift in The Journey From Grief to Healing. Making amends with Daniel indeed gives her the strength to move beyond her past and engage in her present. In turn, she saves Es Vedrà.

Grace’s actions throughout the novel’s final chapters capture her character’s ability to heal and grow. These chapters particularly further the novel’s explorations of The Intersection of Aging and Self-Exploration and The Search for Meaning, Purpose, and Happiness. Grace is a septuagenarian but is discovering how to live a full life, even in her older age. Once she eliminates the boundaries between herself and others, she is free to explore the unknown and embrace the bolder, more adventurous facets of her identity. Her experiences at the nightclub, the casino, and the protest particularly reify her internal evolutions. In each of these scenes, Haig uses figurative language when Grace translates her transformative experience to Maurice. For example, while at Amnesia, Grace likens the experience of dancing to techno music to “the collective euphoria of experiencing mathematical harmony in an imperfect world” (265). While playing roulette at the casino, she explains that “[a]s with life, you [must] weigh up the inherent risks and rewards and act accordingly” (274). Finally, she describes the atmosphere at the protest, saying that the sun “scatter[s] light across the water like a thousand jewels” and that the feeling of staring at Es Vedrà over Art’s and Sofía’s heads is “like staring at a feeling” (111). Haig’s use of metaphor, simile, and symbolism in these moments captures her deep and poetic engagement with her surroundings and her newly empowered state of mind. Her internal changes have inspired changes in her relationships and given her the courage to act.

The final sequences of the narrative give Grace’s story a redemptive ending. She doesn’t simply learn how to let go of her sorrow. Rather, in healing from her loss, she finds true happiness and peace. This internal resolve helps her engage with others, continue investing in her friends’ lives, and greet each day with gratitude. The novel thus shows how no individual is too old to evolve.
