Character Analysis

Cadence “Cady” Scott/“Katie”

Cady is the 16-year-old protagonist of the story. She regains consciousness one afternoon in a cabin, tied up and on the floor. She quickly realizes that she’s been tortured but has no memory of who or where she is. She only knows that there are two men in the cabin with her and that they want her dead. When she manages to fend off one of her attackers, possibly killing him, she flees the cabin and goes on the run, all the while trying to figure out the circumstances surrounding her memory loss and why people want her dead. As the narrative progresses, Cady must determine who to trust, including a young man named Ty who goes out of his way to help her. The two try and piece together what little information they have while staying one step ahead of the men determined to kill her. By the novel’s end, Cady is able to regain her memory and reconnect with her family, but she’s still faced with a dilemma when the men who want her dead catch up to her. She also learns that her brother Max has contracted the hantavirus and that she must retrieve the antidote from Z-Biotech. In the end, she overcomes her adversities and is reunited with her family. She goes from fearful and unsure to trusting and protective. The novel ends with her kissing Ty and contemplating their relationship.

Ty

Ty is a young man about the same age as Cady. He was kicked out of his house by his mother for ruining his stepfather’s BMW. He used to be homeless, but now works at McDonald’s and is studying to be an EMT. He sees Cady when she comes into McDonald’s, and when he sees a napkin on which she wrote all the horrible and strange things she was dealing with, he decides to help her. Although dangerous, Ty stays with Cady and assists until the end. He and Cady end the story together with a kiss, suggesting that they will finally have the relationship the narrative has been hinting at.

Michael Brenner

Michael Brenner is the man who tries to kill Cady in the woods on the orders of Kirk Nowell. Cady defends herself against Brenner, injuring him, and then she flees the cabin where she’s been tortured. Although Z-Biotech makes it seem like Cady has killed Brenner and that he was a worker at Sagebrush Mental Hospital, he is very much alive. Brenner is later introduced as a computer scientist at Z-Biotech. He was promised a lot of money if he went along with plan, and he was instrumental in altering her Facebook page. Cady breaks his arm when she regains her memory and thinks that he killed her brother, Max. Brenner is later arrested for his crimes.

Kirk Nowell

Kirk Nowell is the president of Z-Biotech. He acquired Z-Biotech, a research company where Cady’s parents worked as virologists. The Scotts found the hantavirus disease, which killed eight people, and subsequently found a cure for it. Nowell wanted to turn the disease into a bioweapon and tried to silence the Scotts when they not only refused but collected evidence about his illegal activities. Nowell is the man with the oxblood shoes. He wants to sell the information to the highest bidder and flee the country. Although it looks like he wins near the end, Cady switches the antidote and Nowell is knocked out by an explosion at Z-Biotech. He, along with his coworkers, are arrested.

Elizbeth Tanzir/“Aunt Liz”

Elizabeth is the senior vice president of marketing at Z-Biotech. She pretends to be Cady’s aunt, Elizabeth Quinn, until Cady regains her memories and realizes that her mother only has a brother. Once Elizabeth realizes that Cady can’t remember—or won’t—she drops her trickery and pulls a gun on Ty and Cady. Elizabeth is cold and calculating, and her very presence unnerves Cady. She is foiled by Ty and Cady, tied up until the police arrive, and then arrested. While tied up, she explains how Z-Biotech wants to use the disease and vaccine and then flee to a country without extradition to the U.S. She also explains how the body that Cady thought was her baby brother Max was actually a chimpanzee. The chimpanzee was also the “remains” that were found at the cabin.

Janie and Patrick Scott

Janie and Patrick Scott are renowned virologists that once worked at Z-Biotech, in addition to being Cady’s parents. When a sudden disease begins killing people, the husband and wife team discover that the disease is a hantavirus that’s being passed from the droppings of mice. They then make a vaccine, but the company they work for, Z-Biotech, want to weaponize the disease. The two begin collecting evidence against the company, but when they’re discovered, must go on the run. They manage to take their young son, Max, but they are unable to contact Cady in time. Cady is kidnapped and tortured. Janie and Scott flee and leave their daughter a coded message as to their whereabouts. While fleeing, Patrick is shot, and Max is accidentally infected with the hantavirus. Cady is able to contact her parents and learns that she must retrieve the antidote from Z-Biotech to save Max. She is able to do so and is safely reunited with her parents.
