Themes

The Philosophy of Racing

Throughout the book, philosophies taken from race car driving are presented parallel to Denny and Enzo’s daily life. Enzo dissects these lessons from racing intelligently and strategically, applying them to events that are happening around him. This serves multiple purposes in the narrative, but overall, it is clear that Stein uses these lessons to demonstrate how racing is a metaphor for life. For instance, racing advice is often used to offer some perspective on the volume of variables against which Denny has to contend with, both in his occupation as a driver and also in his home life. It also provides the reader a map of Denny’s internal thought processes by way of Enzo, who uses smart racing strategies as a cipher to understand and describe his master. For Enzo, racing lessons also provide context and solution to the challenges in the story. When Denny comes up against a complication in his marriage or is fighting lawsuits, Enzo uses these opportunities to reflect on how competent drivers deal with unexpected challenges on the track. Stein seems to draw the connection between life and racing as a way to show how going through life’s ups and downs is similar to navigating a car. While driving, you have to be aware of the conditions and the fact that any small action could alter everything. In short, you need to be in the present. Similarly, in life, it’s important to always stay in the moment so you don’t go off track.

Death and Rebirth

Death and rebirth are also prevalent themes within the novel. The story opens with Enzo wishing for his own death so that he can be reborn as a human. Enzo desires a spiritual and corporeal rebirth for himself, and he wishes Denny a symbolic rebirth in the form of leaving his past worries behind and living up to his potential as a famous racer. During her death, Eve’s soul is pictured as having journeyed elsewhere to a great unknown, but rebirth is never a characteristic attributed to her. The act of being reborn is depicted as something reserved for those with urgent or unfinished business or goals to be fulfilled. In Eve’s final moments of consciousness, she seems to have achieved a state of acceptance and serenity, perhaps to the point where her rebirth would have proven unnecessary.

Death is also used in the book to talk about life. Although narrated by Enzo, the book is primarily the story of Denny’s life. Also, the reader knows from the beginning that Enzo is on the verge of death, yet rather than focus on that, Enzo chooses to discuss the lives of those around him. The message here seems to be that while death is imminent for everyone, living and being in the present is really what matters.

The Bonds of Loyalty

The Art of Racing in the Rain is a novel about relationships and the loyalty that tests these bonds. Enzo is shown as a fierce protector of the members of his family, but his true loyalty lies with Denny. In fact, he is initially distrustful and suspicious of Eve because of his close allegiance to Denny.

For Enzo, loyalty is something that is earned through trust, not taken at face value. Enzo shows loyalty to those he feels are deserving of it and who offer him a glimpse into their private worlds. When Enzo is allowed in the room to witness Eve’s birth to Zoe, he is invited to an intimate moment and they immediately earn his loyalty in return. However, in contrast, when Eve’s father feeds him a pepper that makes him sick, Enzo is immediately distrusting of the Twins and instead makes a mess on their carpet.
