Part 1, Chapters 12-22Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Part 1, Chapter 12 Summary: “Addy: Sunday, July 5”

Addy is anxious to be back at Bayview High School because it conjures up memories of Jake. Her anxiety increases when they walk to the baseball field and find Jake there working out. Nate apologizes because his father told him Jake worked out there from time to time. Jake offers to leave. Addy walks away. Jake calls after her, but she ignores him.

Nate and Addy approach the equipment shed and find Patrick in a panic, asking about an ambulance. Nate and Addy are confused until Patrick points out that Phoebe is semi-conscious on the floor. Patrick says that it is his fault because he lost his keys, and someone must have used them to break into the shed. On Phoebe’s arm is written one word: Practice.

Part 1, Chapter 13 Summary: “Phoebe: Tuesday, July 7”

Phoebe learns at the hospital that she was drugged but has no memory of the ordeal. She is unhurt and untouched except for the word written on her arm. She thinks about the events of the party and tries to figure out when she was drugged. She remembers taking a drink from Vanessa and the girls asking about Knox. She wonders if someone drugged her by accident when they were really targeting Vanessa. Now, Cooper is giving her a ride to Café Contigo to meet with the Bayview Crew because Phoebe’s mother will not allow Phoebe out of the house alone.

Part 1, Chapter 14 Summary: “Phoebe: Tuesday, July 7”

The Bayview Crew gathers on the new rooftop patio at Café Contigo. Maeve begins by telling everyone that she has searched the internet for people involved with Vengeance is Mine, Jared Jackson’s subreddit group, but hasn’t found anything. She doesn’t believe they are involved in this new game.

Maeve brings up the word written on Phoebe’s arm and points out that Jake said something about practice when he changed her tire. Addy has already suggested that Jake might be involved, but the others argue that Jake is too closely monitored. Addy suggests he might have friends helping him. Addy refers to a newspaper article about Jake that contained flattering things said about him to further argue he could be using other people to help him create a new game. Phoebe, however, still believes Owen had something to do with the billboard and feels guilty that she can’t tell her friends about it. Phoebe tells the crew that she remembers being in a room with vines on the wallpaper while she was drugged. Addy remembers the wallpaper in a room at Jake’s family vacation home in Ramona fitting that description.

The perspective switches to Simon six years ago. Simon is at the Ramona house with the Riordan family. He is alone because Scott and Katherine have gone antiquing, and Jake is asleep. Simon works on making a list of the people he hates, adding Jake to the list for being fake. Simon got up early that morning and overheard Jake tell Scott he didn’t want Simon there but invited him because there was no one else. Scott encourages Jake to make more friends, suggesting Cooper Clay. When the Riordans return from antiquing, they argue because Katherine wants to go back to the city for work. Scott storms off, and Katherine makes a phone call to someone she is excited to see in the city.

Part 1, Chapter 15 Summary: “Nate: Wednesday, July 8”

At work, Gavin catches Nate staring at Vanessa and gets the wrong impression. Nate insists he isn’t interested in Vanessa. Gavin asks if he might ask her out. Vanessa goes over to sit with Katherine. Jake comes to the bar to order a glass of wine for his mother. Nate refuses to serve him. Jake calls Nate a loser and says that Jake will own the country club one day, and Nate will forever have to serve him. Nate tries not to react, but when Jake disrespects Bronwyn, Nate attempts to hit Jake and Gavin has to pull him back. Katherine takes Jake out of the bar, and a group of regulars tell Nate he should have hit Jake. Gavin assures Nate that Jake will face consequences sooner or later. Nate is cheered when Bronwyn texts him a picture of the things she has purchased for their dinner with Patrick that night.

Part 1, Chapter 16 Summary: "Nate; Wednesday, July 8”

Nate is alone with his father, waiting for Bronwyn to arrive: She’s late and not answering his text messages. Maeve FaceTimes to ask Nate to give a message to Bronwyn, but when she learns Bronwyn isn’t there, she grows concerned. Addy calls, and Maeve adds her to the FaceTime call; Addy says she hasn’t heard from Bronwyn either. Nate remembers what Jake said at the country club and rushes out of the house to find him. However, Addy won’t give him the address of the Ramona house, insisting instead that she and Maeve drive him there.

Part 1, Chapter 17 Summary: "Addy: Wednesday, July 8”

Addy drives Nate and Maeve to the Riordans’ Ramona house. They are nearly there when Nate receives a call from the Rojas family’s home phone. Bronwyn explains that she got lost returning from a raspberry patch, then dropped her phone in a river. She didn’t have anyone’s numbers memorized, so she couldn’t call until she got home. Nate quickly forgives Bronwyn, expressing his love for her. Addy breaks into the conversation to suggest they go to the Riordans’ vacation house anyway to get pictures of the wallpaper.

Part 1, Chapter 18 Summary: “Addy: Wednesday, July 8”

Addy, Nate, and Maeve approach the Riordans’ vacation house. They park close to the street and walk up the driveway. They are surprised to see Jake’s car in the driveway. Maeve wants to leave, but Addy insists on going forward on the off chance that Jake has someone else held captive there. Addy approaches the front of the house and looks for the spare key. Before she can find it, Jake appears in the doorway. Jake makes threats toward Addy before going back inside to join his father. Addy and Nate head back to the car. Maeve catches up to them and tells them she got a picture of the wallpaper.

Part 1, Chapter 19 Summary: “Phoebe: Thursday, July 9”

Phoebe, Luis, and Maeve go with Cooper and Kris to help Cooper shop for a new car. When they show her the photo, Phoebe insists that the wallpaper at the Riordans’ is not the same wallpaper she remembers from the night she was kidnapped. The group arrives at a luxury car lot to browse. Phoebe and Maeve linger outside. Maeve apologizes for confronting Phoebe over the picture of Jake changing her tire. Phoebe wants to tell Maeve the truth about Owen, but Luis interrupts before she can.

Part 1, Chapter 20 Summary: “Phoebe: Thursday, July 9”

Phoebe works a full shift after car shopping, annoyed by Evie’s kindness. She goes to Knox’s afterward, sneaking through his window again. Phoebe tells Knox that she wanted to go out with him when he asked after Ashton and Eli’s wedding, but she said no because of Owen. She explains how she and Emma discovered Owen was part of the truth or dare game. Knox is generous in his understanding, admitting that if it were one of his sisters, he would have done the same. Knox expresses gratitude that Phoebe is finally telling everyone the truth, but she makes it clear she has no intention of telling anyone else. Knox agrees to keep quiet but urges Phoebe to go public so that Owen can get help. Knox’s mother interrupts before they can finish their conversation.

Part 1, Chapter 21 Summary: "Nate: Friday, July 10”

Nate is worried about going back to work because he is afraid he’ll be fired for the fight he almost got into a fight with Jake. However, when he arrives, Vanessa tells him the regulars complained to management, and Jake is banned from the bar. Nate asks Vanessa why she hangs out at the bar. Vanessa explains that she wants an internship at Conrad and Olsen, an advertising agency where Katherine Riordan once worked. She’s trying to make friends with Katherine so that Katherine will put in a good word for her. Vanessa also mentions that Conrad and Olsen control the digital billboard on which the game message appeared and that the billboard was hacked. Finally, Vanessa tells Nate she regrets her behavior during Simon’s murder investigation and wants to make it up. Nate invites her to his and Addy’s one-third birthday party.

Nate arrives home to find Bronwyn, his father, and his roommate Crystal having a dinner of fruit salad. Crystal mentions that Reggie hasn’t been around since the day before. After a brief discussion, Bronwyn, Patrick, and Nate decide to go look in the equipment shed at Bayview High School.

Part 1, Chapter 22 Summary: "Nate: Friday, July 10”

Bronwyn, Patrick, and Nate check the equipment shed at the high school but find it empty. Bronwyn suggests they check the gym, too. Patrick hesitates, concerned about being seen by the security cameras. However, he walks around and realizes the cameras are off. On the way to the gym, Patrick apologizes for not being there when Nate needed him most. They walk into the boys’ locker room, and Nate sees blood on the floor. They turn a corner and find Reggie gagged and tied to a chair that has fallen over. There is a wound on his forehead. The word “Makes” is written on his arm.

Part 1, Chapters 12-22 Analysis

The theme of Privilege and Entitlement as a Hindrance to Justice comes into play again when Jake confronts Nate. Jake uses his position as the son of a wealthy man to intimidate Nate and to attempt to make Nate feel inferior even though Jake is the one who just got released from nearly two years in juvenile detention. There is a power play, with Jake feeling entitled simply because of his family’s wealth and the reputation behind their name. Nate, however, proves to be the better man when he walks away from the fight, even if he needs help doing it. This moment also shows the depth of Gavin’s character. The fact that Gavin stood up for Nate shows that he has a good moral compass and is willing to help a friend. There is also foreshadowing in Gavin’s comment that Jake will eventually get what’s coming to him.

In these chapters, the rising action increases anxiety and fear among the Bayview Crew. Addy’s insistence of Jake’s culpability in Phoebe’s kidnapping and her reaction to being back at Bayview High School even before she sees Jake shows the depth of her trauma with Jake. Addy went through a terrible ordeal when Jake tried to kill her in the first novel, and Addy’s trauma has been compounded by Jake’s return to Bayview. At the same time, Addy is surrounded by trusted friends who are helping her deal with her past and will eventually help her overcome it.

Phoebe’s self-imposed isolation from her friends demonstrates The Peril of Keeping Secrets. Although her friends rally around her in the aftermath of her kidnapping, Phoebe’s guilt related to Owen’s role in the truth or dare game only makes it harder for her to open up. On one hand, Phoebe opening up to Knox marks a moment of character development, but on the other, she refuses to take his advice and cannot allow herself to tell the others. Phoebe doesn’t want Owen to be treated badly or prosecuted, nor does she want her friends to look at her differently. However, Phoebe is damaging her friends’ trust by holding on to her secret. The fact that she nearly told Maeve and did tell Knox foreshadows the moment when the truth will finally come out.

There is symbolism in the kidnapping of Reggie and Phoebe. The words written on their arms signal the game’s unfolding, and they are clues to the motivations of the game’s architect. The place in which they were found—each on Bayview High School property and both in places related to the athletic department—suggests a connection to Jake Riordan because he was a star athlete. The use of Patrick’s keys connects Nate to the game, pulling him into a peripheral role just like the role he played as the suspect in Simon’s death. Phoebe’s memory of wallpaper also plays an important role as it, first, takes Maeve, Addy, and Nate to the Riordans’ vacation home, and it will reveal the true identity of the game architect later in the novel. These things all suggest clues to a larger picture that the Bayview Crew will work to figure out, foreshadowing the climax of the novel.

Bronwyn’s disappearance serves several purposes. First, it reveals the depth of Nate’s feelings for her, and it plays on the idea that a sibling will do anything to protect their loved one. This is seen in Phoebe’s protection of Owen, and in Knox’s declaration that he would do anything for his sisters. This relates to the theme of Seeking and Offering Redemption that runs throughout the novel. Bronwyn’s disappearance also brings Addy and Jake face to face for a second time, once again revealing Jake’s cruel side when he threatens her. Jake might have appeared to be a kinder person at the beginning of the novel, but his unwillingness to change or take responsibility for his actions is beginning to show.

It is important to note McManus’s mention of the Trevor Project in this set of chapters. The Trevor Project is a real-world organization that provides crisis support to LGBTQ+ youth. In the first novel of the series, Vanessa bullied Cooper because of his sexuality. This is the kind of bullying the Trevor Project is designed to help young people overcome. McManus’s mention of it while Vanessa is seeking redemption for her actions expresses the kind of compassion organizations like the Trevor Project promote.
