Chapters 33-44Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Chapter 33 Summary

The next challenge at camp is a tree-climbing competition. Raj loved the rock climbing wall at his playground back home, so he picks a tree and starts climbing. When he is tied with a girl from another team, he looks down and freezes in terror. Then, he remembers Klawde’s words about having a strong heart and continues to the top of the tree. Raj wins the competition and feels amazing for a moment before he realizes, “There was only one problem: How the heck was I going to get back down?” (135).

Chapter 34 Summary

Klawde interrogates his loyal follower, who says that the cats of Lyttyrboks seem happy under their new ruler, who gave everyone the right to universal furcare. Klawde believes that this is a hoax and that he must return to burn down the trees and take away the rights that his enemy has bestowed. He declares, “The time is RIPE for my return” (137). He tests the teleporter by sending a signed baseball to Lyttyrboks. When it arrives intact, his follower suggests testing it with a live specimen and asks if there are any other cats around.

Chapter 35 Summary

When Raj gets home, he starts to tell Klawde about his day but is interrupted when Klawde announces they must test the teleporter. Suddenly, a neighbor arrives. She thinks that Klawde is adorable and looks like her own cat, who is about the same size. She also shares the rumor that a camper died at Raj’s camp last year. At this, Raj glances at the teleporter, wondering, “Maybe there was room in it for me” (143).

Chapter 36 Summary

Klawde tricks the neighbor’s cat into the teleporter by leaving a trail of cat treats. The cat arrives at Lyttyrboks, where he cleans “a part of his body that we normally do not clean in public” (146). Still, Klawde is thrilled that the teleporter is working, and he rejoices at the thought that he will soon be home, with Raj at his side as a weapon.

Chapter 37 Summary

The day before Survival Night, Raj and his team forage and make final preparations, and Raj begins to panic. At home, the neighbor puts up fliers for her missing cat, and Klawde brags about transporting an animal across the universe. When Raj asks if Klawde transported the neighbor’s cat, Klawde lies and claims to have transported a mouse. Raj believes him and eyes the teleporter, asking, “Is it powerful enough to send something bigger than a cat across the universe?” (152).

Chapter 38 Summary

Klawde assures Raj that they could both leave Earth before Survival Night, and he promises to send Raj back to Earth whenever he wants to return. Raj goes to bed, leaving Klawde to purr in pleasure at the thought that his “evil scheme was working PERFECTLY!” (153). The next morning, Raj decides to go to Lyttyrboks, but before he can, Steve and Cedar show up at his house. They are both concerned about Survival Night.

Chapter 39 Summary

Raj says that he can get them all out of Survival Night. He reveals that Klawde is a warlord from another planet with a teleportation device, but his friends don’t believe him. Raj asks Klawde to tell them the truth, but Klawde only “blinked, and said one word: ‘Mrow?’” (159).

Chapter 40 Summary

When Raj demands to know why Klawde refused to speak to his friends, Klawde makes up a story about how Raj is needed on Earth to fight the battles of his life, including Survival Night. In truth, the teleporter cannot transport humans. If Raj teleports, he will explode. Klawde was still willing to try to transport Raj, at least until his follower told him that doing so is not worth it and would result in “a very messy teleporter” (163).

Chapter 41 Summary

At camp, Turkey Vulture explains the rules of Survival Night. For the next 24 hours, the campers must live off the land and hunt each other. The last standing player wins the game for their team, while captured players are taken to an undisclosed place. Then, he starts the event by shouting “let Survival Night BEGIN!” (166). Raj’s team goes on the hunt for Scorpion’s gang, only to be chased off with rocks.

Chapter 42 Summary

At home, Raj’s dad gives Klawde a special mouse toy that is the best thing that Klawde has ever smelled. He rips it apart and rolls in its stuffing, thinking, “This mouse was the best thing on this entire miserable planet” (171).

Chapter 43 Summary

Raj and his team run away from Scorpion’s gang, realizing that they cannot beat this stronger group. Raj remembers Klawde’s speech about fighting his wars, and the kids make a plan to steal the food from Scorpion’s shelter. They find it empty and start searching for a secret lair. Raj jumps at every forest noise. He keeps telling himself that it is only a game, even though “it really didn’t feel like one” (176).

Chapter 44 Summary

Klawde falls asleep and dreams that he is the lord of the entire universe. When he wakes, Raj’s dad offers him another mouse doll. Klawde desperately wants it but runs before he succumbs to its smell because “it was time to leave this planet of nightmares” (178).

Chapters 33-44 Analysis

When the long-anticipated survival night finally begins, Raj must focus on Embracing Challenges to Achieve Growth despite his many fears and insecurities. Up until now, Raj has felt uncomfortable at nature camp, but he has managed to survive each new challenge because he has always been able to return home at the end of the day. For Survival Night, however, the stakes have been raised. The game lasts a full 24 hours, and Raj is faced with living off the land and avoiding Scorpion and his team. After two weeks at camp, living off the land doesn’t seem so bad to Raj, and this shift in his mindset shows that he has grown and gained a new inner strength. His new maturity appears again in Chapter 43 when he realizes that Survival Night is like a war and that Scorpion’s team is just the opposing side. By adopting Klawde’s competitive outlook, Raj gains confidence in his plan to prevail against the other kids, but his bravery quickly turns to fear when he realizes that Scorpion’s team is much better prepared. Thus, despite his progress, he still has important life lessons to learn.

In many ways, this conflict represents key aspects of The Differences between Animals and Humans, for Scorpion and his team have learned to work with nature like animals do, and these skills give them an edge during Survival Night. This dynamic also shows the difference between thinking like a human and thinking like an animal. Raj’s plans and strategies do not account for the fact that Scorpion and his team have taken on the mindset of predators and see Raj’s group as prey. This tense new vibe raises the stakes of Survival Night to a much higher level.

While the conversation between Klawde and his loyal follower in Chapter 34 is highly whimsical, the exchange also makes important points about different types of leadership. When Klawde ruled, he oppressed the cats of Lyttyrboks, and this is why he was forcibly ousted from power. Now, Klawde expects that his people will want him back because matters have gotten worse, but this is not the case, as Klawde’s nemesis and successor now offers his subjects better rights and living conditions. Because the cats of Lyttyrboks are now much happier and more content, it is clear that Klawde’s despotic rule was deeply harmful to their society.

In many ways, these scenes highlight similarities between humans and the cats of Lyttyrboks. Like many humans of Earth, the cats of Lyttyrboks sit back and let their leaders make decisions for them. Thus far, this has resulted in a better lifestyle, but there is no proof that their good fortune will last or that their current ruler will continue to provide benefits for all. When Klawde learns of his nemesis’s decisions, he has an even greater urge to return home and regain his power, believing that Lyttyrboks is not being properly controlled. As he goes to unscrupulous lengths to test the teleporter, it is clear that Klawde’s desire to go home has eclipsed his new bond with Raj. At this point, Klawde truly does become the evil warlord that Lyttyrboks exiled, and he must undergo some additional character development before he redeems himself in the novel’s climax.

Like Raj’s struggles on Survival Night, Klawde also faces challenges that keep him from completing his goals. Most notably, his plans are thwarted by the limitations of his teleporter. He initially believes that he can gain the upper hand on Lyttyrboks by bringing Raj with him and having the human boy literally stamp out the competition. When Klawde is finally forced to abandon this bloodthirsty plan due to the current limits of his technology, he must navigate a new angle of Embracing Challenges to Achieve Growth; in this instance, he must accept that some challenges cannot be overcome, and he must learn to adapt to the realities of his circumstances.
