Chapters 55-72 Analysis

Nowlin drops many hints about Jamie’s growing dissatisfaction in his relationship with Autumn. Alongside the disintegration of Autumn’s parents’ marriage, Jamie’s interest seems to be moving elsewhere. He spends a lot of time going to the movies with Sasha, something Autumn doesn’t mind or see as suspicious. He doesn’t call her back when he’s with Sasha. Autumn might be concerned, but her family is imploding and she is too distracted to notice. The narrative shows how Jamie, the first to declare his love and support of Autumn, now avoids saying “I love you.” He makes Autumn feel as though her symptoms of depression are getting to be too much for him.

Nowlin plants the seeds for Jamie’s growing dissatisfaction, making it no surprise when Jamie ends the relationship. The breakup opens the possibility of Autumn and Finny exploring a romance. It also foretells the love triangle that Finny, Sylvie, and Autumn will find themselves in.

Finny and Autumn’s relationship changes when Jamie breaks up with Autumn, as Finny puts himself in the position of being her support system. This again shows Finny’s kind nature. His behavior casts doubts on Autumn’s belief that Finny has never seen her as more than a friend, or that he feels indifferently about her now. These doubts are underscored when Jack tells Autumn that Finny was heartbroken over her in middle school.

Yet, what Autumn holds onto is how Jack says Finny got over her. Autumn can’t imagine that Finny might still be in love with her despite every sign that he is.

These chapters continue to explore teen pregnancy with the birth of Angie and Dave’s daughter. The friends all gather and celebrate this new life, with Autumn being pulled back into her friend group briefly. Jamie reaches out, but Autumn rebuffs him and continues to rebuff Sasha. She learns that her friends still want her to be part of their group, but philosophizes that they are all going too far apart for school. Her feelings make Finny question her loyalty to friends. He is already convinced that it was easy for her to end their friendship, foreshadowing the moment when he confronts her on why she ended her friendship with Alexis and the others. Later, Autumn will desperately need friends, but they will be scattered at different colleges, all living their best life without her.

The joy that Autumn and Finny’s mothers experience at seeing Finny and Autumn together is comical. It also feels as if everyone believes the relationship was meant to be from birth. This plays into the idea of fated love, a common trope in romance novels. However, the novel, unlike other many other romances, will not give the couple a happy ending.

These chapters emphasize The Subjectivity of Memories. Autumn has looked back on her relationship with Finny with fondness, but always from her own point of view. With Finny more in the picture, it is becoming clearer each day that he remembers things differently from Autumn. It is also becoming clearer that Finny has an exceedingly different opinion of Sylvie, one that makes him feel as though Autumn is too closedminded about the people around her. The subjectivity of memory will continue to develop as a theme as Finny and Autumn’s relationship expands and they share more memories together.
