Part 1: The Hollow

Chapter 1 Summary

Bryce Quinlan is a 23-year-old human-Fae “half-breed” who works in a magical art gallery owned by the sorceress Jesiba Roga. The gallery deals in pricey antiques, but its real treasure lies in a basement vault of forbidden magical books. This library is guarded by a fire sprite named Lehabah, who keeps the books from wandering off on their own. She is sometimes aided by Bryce’s pet chimera, Syrinx.

Bryce and her associates live on the planet of Midgard. Fifteen thousand years earlier, the planet was taken over by beings who found a way to enter the dimension that had previously only contained humans and their animals. Since that time, humans have been relegated to second-class status and deprived of most civil rights.

The new overlords of Midgard are the Asteri, semi-divine beings who rule remotely. Beneath them are the magical Vanir, who divide the realm into four houses sorted by species and an individual’s choice of allegiance to a specific house. The House of Earth and Blood contains shifters, witches, and humans. The House of Sky and Breath includes angels, Fae, and elementals. The House of Many Waters contains river entities of various kinds. The House of Flame and Shadow includes demons, reapers, wraiths, and many unnamed dark forces.

The planet is ruled from the Eternal City in the territory of Pangera by six Asteri. Across the Haldren Sea in the territory of Valbara is the Crescent City (also known as Lunathion), where Bryce lives. The power elite in this region consists of seven Heads of the City, who run the town’s affairs. Six are the leaders of various magical clans, and the seventh is Micah Domitus, the archangel who governs the province:

Each Head controlled a specific part of the city: the Prime of the wolves in Moonwood, the Fae Autumn King in Five Roses, the Under-King in the Bone Quarter, the Viper Queen in the Meat Market, the Oracle in the Old Square, and the River Queen […] far beneath the Istros River’s turquoise surface (9).

On this particular day, the city council is in an uproar because a human named Philip Briggs is about to be released from prison. Briggs is a bomber-terrorist intent on starting a revolution that will allow humans to overthrow their magical overlords.

Bryce’s best friend Danika is more upset than anyone at Briggs’s release since she captured him. Danika is the head of a shapeshifter wolf pack called the Pack of Devils. They maintain law and order in the Old Square District. Danika tells Bryce that she intends to protest Briggs’s release at the council meeting that afternoon.

Chapter 2 Summary

Danika stops into the antique gallery to take a shower and stow her magical sword in a closet before setting out for the council meeting. Bryce complains that her back is sore because of the tattoos that Danika insisted they both get when they were drunk a few days earlier. Scrawled across their backs in some unknown language are the words, “Through love, all is possible.” Danika’s skin has already healed because she is a full-blooded Vanir.

Bryce admires her friend’s resilience since she herself possesses very little magical ability. The two first met when they became college roommates. Danika will someday be the leader of her pack, bypassing her mother, Sabine, in the line of succession. In contrast, Bryce is a nobody. Bryce’s only other two friends are Fury, a mer who works as an assassin, and Juniper, a faun who is a professional ballet dancer.

Fury has already made the Drop. This ritual is a rite of passage that allows the Vanir to attain semi-immortality. Both Danika and Bryce anticipate doing this when they reach the age of 27. Although the ritual will extend their lifespans, they can still be killed. This is a fact that Briggs uses to his advantage by planting bombs in Vanir locations.

When Danika sets out for the council, Bryce accompanies her part of the way. They stop at the Old Square Gate to make a wish in exchange for a sliver of their magic when they touch the gate. This has become a tourist attraction, but the gates in each sector were once used as communication portals among all six regions.

Chapter 3 Summary

That evening, Bryce returns from work to find the entire Pack of Devils camped out in her apartment enjoying pizza night. Danika is in a bad mood because the council is unable to prevent Briggs’s release. Worse still, Sabine publicly humiliates her daughter by blaming her for the deaths of two college students near Luna’s Temple during a blackout a week earlier on Danika’s watch.

Rather than hanging out with her friends, Bryce prepares for a date with a rich human named Reid, whom the pack dislikes for his arrogant ways. Connor, Danika’s second in command, has a crush on Bryce and pleads with her to go out with him. She agrees to do so on Saturday night.

Chapter 4 Summary

Bryce arrives at a pricey restaurant called the Pearl and Rose, but Reid is 45 minutes late. When he does show up, his behavior annoys Bryce so much that she leaves midway through the meal. She then calls Fury and Juniper to meet her at their favorite night spot, the White Raven. On the way inside, Bryce purchases some party drugs from a street dealer. She intends to get very high that evening.

She sends and receives texts all evening. Some are from Danika complaining about Bryce’s absence, and several are from Connor anticipating their upcoming date. Even though she has serious feelings for Connor, Bryce has casual sex with someone at the club that night. She texts Danika afterward to brag about the encounter.

Chapter 5 Summary

Hours later, Bryce staggers back home. She is so befuddled by drugs and alcohol that she has trouble climbing the stairs to her flat. When she arrives, a horror awaits her. A demonic creature has ripped apart the entire wolf pack, including her beloved friend Danika. The monster bolts out of the apartment. Grabbing a broken table leg, Bryce chases after it for blocks. She eventually catches it gutting an archangel (Micah). Bryce is able to fight it off before calling for help and collapsing from her own injuries.

Chapter 6 Summary

Still later that same night, an angel named Isaiah Tiberian observes Bryce in an interrogation room in the military legion’s holding center. She is still in shock and unable to speak. Another angel named Hunt Athalar arrives to question her. Both men are fallen angels who rebelled against the political regime and participated in an unsuccessful uprising years earlier. As punishment, they are now magically enslaved to serve the archangels for all eternity. The tattooed haloes on their foreheads keep them from rebelling. Hunt has become Micah’s personal assassin, among other shady duties. Because Hunt controls the lethal power of lightning, he is known as Umbra Mortis—the shadow of death.

Bryce remains unresponsive to the angels’ questions. They believe that the demon was somehow summoned by Briggs, so they take him back into custody. They eventually release Bryce, though Sabine accuses the girl of stealing the hereditary sword that Danika stowed in the closet at the gallery. After Bryce leaves the station, a Fae prince named Ruhn Danaan arrives, claiming prior jurisdiction in the case. The angels are told to keep out of Fae affairs. Apparently, Bryce is a cousin of Fae royalty through her unknown biological father.

Chapter 7 Summary

Early the following morning, Bryce arrives at the site of the wolf pack’s funeral. She has been told not to attend, so she is conducting her own private farewell ceremony for her friend.

Chapters 1-7 Analysis

The society of Midgard is complex, and the first set of chapters is devoted to constructing that world. The hierarchy of magical and nonmagical creatures is described, thus giving a sense of how low Bryce rates in the power circles of her society. The chapters also reveal that humans are degraded even more than a half-Fae like Bryce, and they have unsuccessfully tried to rebel against their second-class status.

The central plot points all arise in this segment, but the significance of the theft of Luna’s Horn and Bryce’s tattoo will not be fully understood until the final chapters. In this section, Mass offers themes that will be explored at greater length later on, including the love of power in the rich gallery patrons, Jesiba’s high-handed treatment of her employees, and Reid’s casual disrespect for Bryce. Additionally, there’s the power of love in Danika’s friendship with Bryce, their matching tattoos, and Danika’s insistence on an inscription that reads, “Through love, all is possible.”

The chapters also hint at the role reversals that will occupy much of the rest of the book. After Danika is killed, powerless Bryce grabs a chair leg and takes off in pursuit of the kristallos. She manages to fend off a demon attack that nearly kills Micah, who is supposedly all-powerful. Another role reversal is represented by the plight of the fallen angels. Hunt possesses the formidable power of lightning, but he can only use it at his master’s command. This once powerful angel is reduced to the status of a slave who has no ability to rebel against those who oppress him.
