On the day of Korey’s funeral, Enchanted meets with Derrick, who admits that “[he’s] glad [Korey’s] dead” (324), because he hurt so many people. As they watch the funeral on television, Enchanted notices that Derrick’s dad, Richie, is wearing Korey’s watch. She remembers what Korey told her: “There’s only one like it” (325). Enchanted realizes that Derrick is unaware of what has happened.
Enchanted calls Jessica and tells her that she saw Richie wearing Korey’s watch. Jessica lashes out, avoiding the subject and telling Enchanted that “Korey went crazy after [Enchanted] left” (328). When Enchanted presses her to explain how Richie got Korey’s watch, Jessica hangs up on her.
Enchanted’s lawyer warns her that the police have found enough evidence to arrest her and charge her as an adult now that she is 18. She agrees to turn herself in within two days, but she also asks to see the list of items that were found on Korey. No watch was found on Korey’s body.
Enchanted spends a day visiting her grandmother in Far Rockaway. Enchanted enjoys the beach, but starts having flashbacks to Korey’s abuse. Enchanted thinks about how she found her singing voice in Grandma’s house, and Grandma says that Enchanted is like Ariel from The Little Mermaid: brave and independent. Empowered, Enchanted leaves and declares that she is going “To save [herself]” like Ariel (336).
Enchanted goes to Derrick’s house, hoping to search for Korey’s watch hidden among Richie’s things. While Derrick is distracted, she finds the watch in one of Richie’s drawers, “[ticking] back at [her]” (340). Derrick catches her and realizes what has happened. Derrick tells Enchanted that “no one is going to believe [her]” (341), and he doesn’t want her to try to “pull [his] pops down with [her]” (341). Defeated, Enchanted leaves without the watch.
Enchanted meets with the members of Korey Anonymous, a group of Korey’s former victims, including Amber. The women share their stories, and someone points out that “That creep was always recording” (350). Enchanted suddenly remembers Flounder, and runs out of the meeting. She runs into Gab on the sidewalk.
The mystery of Korey’s missing watch fuels the plot of chapters 79-84. Enchanted is the only one who caught this small detail, and she realizes that Korey’s watch is the key to proving her innocence. The watch comes to represent Richie’s guilt, and as the clock ticks closer to Enchanted’s deadline to turn herself over to the police, she scrambles to figure out how to “save herself” from the situation she has found herself in.
Although Enchanted has always considered Derrick a friend, she is confused and hurt by his decision to protect his father, Richie. Derrick doesn’t have a good relationship with his dad, and although he doesn’t deny that his father probably killed Korey, he still convinces Enchanted not to implicate him. Derrick may not have done anything malicious to Enchanted, and he may have even tried to protect her from Korey, but he knows that his future in the entertainment industry will be jeopardized if his father goes to jail. Derrick becomes just another bystander in the end, overwhelmed by the injustice and drama of his father’s relationship with Korey, and Enchanted is heartbroken to learn that yet another man she thought she could trust has let her down.
Still, these chapters also mark a turning point for Enchanted’s recovery. After visiting her grandmother and reconnecting to her sense of self, Enchanted begins to regain her self-confidence. She is able to see what no one else can, and has grown from a girl who lost her voice to a girl starting to trust herself again.
