Being And Time

The fundamental structure and meaning underpinning and uniting all specific beings or “entities.”

The way in which Dasein exists. It is supposed to convey the sense of an essential constitutive unity between Dasein and the world with which it is concerned.

The relationship Dasein has towards its own end. This can be either authentic or inauthentic.

The fundamental meaning of Dasein’s being-in-the-world. It signifies an essential concern for, and involvement in, the world.

The voiceless voice that awakens Dasein to its potential for authenticity.

Along with idle talk, a constitutive mode of our “fallenness” in the they. It involves the superficial pursuit of perpetual novelty.

The being that is oneself. The theme of the investigation into Being.

The mode of Dasein’s existence that will be studied first in the analytic of Dasein. The most common and familiar elements of Dasein’s coping in the world. For instance, work and travel.

That aspect of Dasein that it cannot determine but that it must form a relation to. For instance, Dasein’s upbringing and age.

The study of history. Contrasted with “historicality,” it can be either authentic or inauthentic.

Dasein’s relation to time, and a past, which transcends its own specific temporality.

Along with curiosity, a constitutive and concrete mode in with the they exists. It involves a progressive detachment from an original engagement with the world as communication is sought for its own sake.

The state in which Dasein initially finds itself. It signifies an alienation from one’s true individual self and possibilities.

The mode in which Dasein is with other Dasein. 

The study of the nature of Being. Contrasted with epistemology and cosmology.

Contrast with “ontological.” A contingent phenomenon, or one that is not necessarily constitutive of Dasein’s being. For instance, the study of contemporary mass culture is “ontic” in the sense that Dasein can and has existed without it.

The method Heidegger uses to pursue his enquiry into Being. It signifies the attempt to return to the phenomenon in a way that is as free as possible from assumptions.

The way Dasein shows itself for most Dasein, but not always as a rule.

A specific way an entity is apprehended. This involves understanding it as a distinct object grasped purely in terms of our seeing. Contrast with “ready-to-hand.”

Another way of apprehending an entity or entities. This involves grasping an entity in our absorbed involvement with it and utilization of it. Contrast with “present-to-hand.”

The attitude that is necessary to hearing the call of conscience.
